The Crisis - Public Transport Challenges in African Cities: Is Mapping and Transit Data A Remedy?
In the vibrant streets of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where long queues and frustrated commuters have become a familiar scene, the quest for accessible and reliable public transport is taking a transformative turn. The challenges faced in Addis Ababa echo across many African cities, prompting a collective effort to address the pressing issue. Leading the charge is the World Resources Institute (WRI), with its innovative Digital Transport for Africa (DT4A) initiative, supported by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD).
Urbanization and motorization have placed African cities at a crossroads, grappling with the escalating demand for transportation while striving for resource efficiency. Residents bear the brunt of increased costs and time spent commuting, as infrastructure development leans disproportionately toward accommodating private vehicles. Amidst these challenges, informal transport systems, particularly minibus services, emerge as crucial players, providing flexibility and accounting for up to 95% of all public transport trips. Yet, these systems often operate in the shadows of neglect within city transport policies, leading to operational inefficiencies.
Recognizing the need for a comprehensive solution, WRI’s DT4A initiative takes a bold step with the mapping of public transport in African cities, aiming to digitize transport systems and elevate service quality. Pioneering Quality Minibus Services
